Mushroom farm monitoring and control system

Mushrooms are considered as one of the main sources of both medicinal and culinary products. Growing mushrooms by watering have been taken into consideration with attention as an efficient way of producing the desired harvest in them. Shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) is the most important culinary medicinal mushroom which ranks at number two in terms of total mushroom production in the world only next to button mushroom. Shiitake is beneficial for soothing bronchial inflammation and regulating urine incontinence as well as for reducing chronic high cholesterol, therefore shiitake mushrooms need to be scientifically increased in the harvest.

However, traditional methods that are done manually, such as manual mushroom greenhouses, mushroom culture on tree logs, and fixed time-based watering methods, result in lower production of mushrooms and hence a lack of precision in managing crucial mushroom characteristics.

The goal of a smart farming system built on the Internet of Things (IoT) is to monitor the growing environment for crops. In order to maximize the use of agricultural resources like water, electricity, fertilizers, and others to increase crop output, involves IoT-based technologies. The use of sensors in mushroom farming has not sufficiently produced an optimal yield according to prior studies. In order to support decision-making, a real-time surveillance system of the important needs of quantity variation at the mushroom farm is still needed to improve the existing methods of mushroom production.

This study intends to reduce the amount of water required in mushroom farming and introduce an automated system with intelligence based on fuzzy logic to maintain a substrate ideal for shiitake mushrooms. In this study, fuzzy logic is used to create an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system for cultivating shiitake mushrooms that maintain the desired levels of air humidity, substrate wetness, and humidity on the farm for better shiitake mushroom production.
