Smart school bus monitoring and notification system using RFID, GPS and ESP8266 NodeMCU

While employing technology in the classroom and school administration is the idea behind smart education, there are other aspects of education that also need to be automated. One such aspect is comforting parents while sending their children to school. One major issue in the City of Kigali is the lack of a reliable system that can track school buses and offer real-time information on where kids are while traveling to school. Since there is currently no solution that can bring together parents, their children, bus drivers, and school administration, this continues to be a problem for many parents.

In light of the advantages and benefits of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its technology, tracking a child's whereabouts on the way to and from school in real-time can ease parents' concerns while also boosting their level of confidence in their safety. The design and implementation of a prototype for an Internet of Things-based smart school bus monitoring system that sends real-time SMS notifications have been proposed. The system enables monitoring of children's health and safety by parents and schools. In order to accomplish this, an Arduino Uno and Arduino IDE are used in conjunction with RFID and GPS technologies to connect to a remote server using GSM/GPRS technologies.

Further readings on the accepted technologies were done in order to achieve the research's goals, and a three-layered IoT system architecture model was chosen for the planning and building of the prototype. This led to the creation of a Smart School Bus (SSB) system that has six major components and seven supporting components. The SSB's software is divided into three parts, identification, tracking, and notification, with a total of six major components. The N-Tier deployment approach is used to implement the whole system. The technical discussion focuses on the fulfillment of system requirements as well as the following steps that can be taken once this study and the SSB business case analysis were completed. The SSB system must strike a balance between the use of various devices, communication rules for software features, and security tools in order to offer its features and guarantee responsive services. KEYWORDS: children, IoT, Internet of things, RFID, GPS, SMS, notification, tracking, and bus monitoring.
